What Is the CARE Method?
A four-step CASPer framework: Clarify, Ask, Recognize, Explore.
CARE is one useful CASPer framework, but it is not the only right method. We now default to I3P for most situational judgment prompts and STAR for personal or past-experience prompts. CARE still helps when you need a simple four-step scaffold under time pressure.
C — Clarify
Identify the core problem, the ethical tension, and the most vulnerable person involved. The grader is checking whether you noticed what is really at stake.
Patient safety vs loyalty to a colleague is a clearer opening than "this is a difficult situation."
A — Ask
State what information is missing before deciding. Ask privately, nonjudgmentally, and only for facts that would change your next step.
R — Recognize
Acknowledge each stakeholder's perspective without turning anyone into a villain. Empathy is stronger when it is attached to specific pressure or risk.
E — Explore
Give conditional action: "If X is true, I would do Y; if Z is true, I would do A." If-then statements show flexibility and reduce assumptions.
Quick test
Re-read your last practice answer. Underline the core issue, missing information, perspectives, and if-then action. If any of the four is missing, that is your weakest CARE box.
